The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is proud to announce that two of the 2026 Fields Medalists are former IMO contestants: Yu Deng, who won a gold medal in 2006, and Jacob Tsimerman, who won gold medals in 2003 and 2004 and achieved a perfect score in 2004.
The 2026 Fields Medals were announced by the International Mathematical Union (IMU) during the Opening Ceremony of the International Congress of Mathematicians in Philadelphia.
This year's Fields Medals were awarded to four outstanding mathematicians: Yu Deng (University of Chicago), John Pardon (Stony Brook University), Jacob Tsimerman (University of Toronto), and Hong Wang (New York University and the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques, France).
Widely regarded as the highest honour in mathematics, the Fields Medal is awarded every four years to up to four mathematicians under the age of 40 in recognition of outstanding mathematical achievements and exceptional promise for future contributions to the field.
Each recipient receives a gold medal featuring the likeness of Archimedes, together with a prize of 15,000 Canadian dollars.
Commenting on the awards, IMU President Hiraku Nakajima said:
“The four medalists exemplify the depth, originality and vitality of contemporary mathematics, and we are delighted to celebrate their achievements at the International Congress of Mathematicians.”
