History
The International Mathematical Olympiad has a rich history spanning over seven decades, growing from a small Eastern European competition to the world's most prestigious mathematics contest for high school students.
The First IMO
The inaugural International Mathematical Olympiad was held in Brașov, Romania. Seven countries participated: Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, German Democratic Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.
Expansion Beyond Europe
The IMO began its global expansion with participation from Mongolia, the first country from outside Europe. This marked the beginning of the olympiad's transformation into a truly international competition.
First IMO in the Americas
The United States hosted its first IMO, bringing the competition to the Western Hemisphere. This edition saw continued growth in participation from non-European countries.
First IMO in Oceania
The IMO reached Oceania for the first time when Australia hosted the competition in Canberra, demonstrating the truly global nature of the olympiad.
First IMO in Asia
Hong Kong hosted the IMO in 1994. This marked an important milestone, as it was the first time the competition was held in Asia.
Millennium IMO in South Korea
The 41st IMO was held in Taejon, South Korea, marking the new millennium with over 80 participating countries and reflecting the competition's continued global expansion.
100+ Countries Participating
The IMO reached a new milestone with 104 participating countries, the first time participation exceeded 100 countries.
First IMO in Africa
South Africa hosted the 55th IMO in Cape Town, the first time the competition was held in Africa, with 101 participating countries.
Virtual IMO
Due to the global pandemic, the IMO was held virtually for the first time in its history. Originally planned for St. Petersburg, Russia, the competition adapted to unprecedented circumstances while maintaining its rigorous standards.
